“Well, what if someone were to come along and start a website called So Billions?”
Someone just asked me this question at dinner.
The sinking pall of scarcity creaking at the hinge of such a question is so not millions.
Billions can of course be perfectly millions if they’re just being billions, not in trying to outdo millions just in terms of sheer quantity.
But in this case, because of the competition implied, billions forfeits any claim to millions.
No one would quarrel with how millions the billion stars that make up the Milky Way galaxy are, or how millions the billions of live cultures in the yogurt I just picked up at Rainbow the other day are.
But millions has little to do with simple quantity.
So then someone asked, what about So Thousands? Maybe So Thousands would refer to a quality of just being very modestly reliable.
This line of thinking was very millions because it was just trying to unpack relationships and follow implicature.
In this way, thousands can be more millions than billions.
